Thanks to all for making Goshen Try-athlon a success

Saturday, July 12, was another great day in Goshen. The 10th annual Kids’ Try-athlon came off with a bang. It is one of the signature events of the Goshen Parks and Recreation program, and appears to get bigger and better each year. This year, 360 kids from ages 5 to 18 participated in a morning of fun, exercise and friendly competition.

Rick and Marlene Finnigan have generously underwritten the event for the past few years from the foundation they established in memory of their daughter Kerry. Thus came the moniker for the Try-athlon, “Kerry’s Kids.” Not only do they provide funding, but the extended Finnigan family was at the Try-athlon volunteering.

Other monetary sponsors were Meijer (Goshen), Goshen Chiropractic Center (Dr. Chett Nelson), Honey’s Frozen Yogurt, INterra Credit Union, Wellington and Weddell Eye Care, Goshen Noon Kiwanis Club, and Sorg Dodge. In-kind donors were Momentum Marketing Consultants, Hacienda (Goshen), The Goshen News, The Elkhart Truth, Gilsinger’s John Deere, The Carpet Gallery, The Award Factory, Walgreens (Goshen), Goshen Farm and Lawn Center and Gardner’s Outdoor Power Equipment.

All of the donations couldn’t have pulled off the event without the help of countless community volunteers. Sue Egli, Goshen Middle School athletic director, coordinates 30-35 volunteers each year. Brandi DeVoe, Goshen Middle School cheer coach, coordinated about 15 cheerleaders. Goshen Middle School girls’ basketball plays also helped. Plus, there were many other individual volunteers.

I have a great time each year hanging medals on kids as they cross the finish line, and passing out trophies at the end. It is gratifying to see parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers cheering for the participants. I appreciate not only the sponsors and volunteers, but also a great Goshen Parks and Recreation staff who works all year to plan this event. Thank you all.
