Former superintendent urges voters to approve Elkhart referenda

Approval of both referendum questions will undoubtedly have a profound and positive impact upon the well-being of our children. However, the referendum questions are about more than transportation, safety and security and critical building repairs.

A large number of individuals, organizations, and businesses have stepped forward to show their support for passage of the two Elkhart Community Schools referendum questions on the May 6th primary ballot. I’m writing to thank each of those supporters and to ask every individual who supports the Elkhart Community Schools to make a commitment to demonstrate your support by going to the polls on May 6th, if you have not already voted.

Approval of both referendum questions will undoubtedly have a profound and positive impact upon the well-being of our children. However, the referendum questions are about more than transportation, safety and security and critical building repairs. When voters approved adding the tax caps to the Indiana Constitution, they also approved the use of the referendum process by school corporations to cover tax cap losses. Clearly, the intent was for communities to be able to demonstrate their support for their local schools. So, the time has come for Elkhart to show its overwhelming support for our children, ECS and the community we call home.
