People's Forum: Gay Marriage Jesus’s message was primarily about love

Ken Blinco is misleading readers when he cites Matthew 19:4-5 in opposition to gay marriage (“Christmas brings hope to a sinful world,” Dec. 5 People’s Forum). If Mr. Blinco would back up to the beginning of Chapter 19, he would observe that the topic being addressed has nothing whatsoever to do with same-sex relationships, but rather with heterosexual divorce.

This is a classic example of how people have distorted the Bible to promote discrimination against various groups of people across the ages. Women, men and women of color, indigenous peoples, immigrants and non-Christians have all been oppressed by people of privilege who pulled a verse or two out of context, claiming it supports their prejudice under the cloak of “the Bible says so.” Nowadays, the group being oppressed is the LGBT community.

When will we all accept that Jesus’ primary message was about love? For all people, but particularly for the oppressed.
