Antique tractor clubs raise money to fight cancer
Posted on June 15, 2014 at 12:00 p.m.

Antique tractors weren’t just spinning their wheels in Nappanee Saturday, June 14. Fifty-two antique tractors participated in a long 10 mile tour as part of the first Antique Tractor Cruise-in.

The tour and larger display, which featured 70 vintage machines at Coppes Commons, wasn’t just for show. Three antique tractor clubs, Echoes Of The Past, Northern Indiana Johnny Poppers, and Nappanee Power From The Past competed against each other to raise money to support United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.

In all $3,500 was raised with Nappanee Power From The Past winning the competition bringing in $1,300.

Fourteen-year-old Alex Ransbottom drove his 1942 Oliver, which once belonged to a great great uncle. The tractor has been restored with a newly painted exterior and Ransbottom plans to rebuild the engine next.

Small children could ride in a cancer survivor’s wagon train that was pulled by a small antique tractor around the perimeter of Coppes Commons. Parents and grandparents eagerly took photos as the kids, holding pink and white balloons, filed past.

Nappanee resident Betty Raber said, “I think it’s awesome,” after taking pictures of children on the ride.

Organizers hope to make this an annual fundraiser to help Elkhart County residents fight cancer.
