I didn't know Rob Smith well. His is one of the many faces I encounter as I am on scenes of fires around Elkhart. But Smith's smile was easy and very recognizable even from afar.
One of the many tasks for the photo department is to process obituary photos. I was saddened to see Smith's face in the folder today.
Smith, a fire investigator for the EFD passed away after 26 years on the job. Reporter Sharon Hernandez and I spoke with Smith and fellow fire investigator Tony Balzano shortly before his retirement. The smile never left Smith's face during the entire interview, even when Balzano struggled to fight back tears. Smith continued to beam that smile that made everyone a little more comfortable even with an uneasy situation.
I don't have many words to add...I will let Smith's smile tell his story.
My condolences to his family, both at home and at the fire station.
