Cold winter causes ice waves in Great Lakes

The extreme cold has brought a little bit of the arctic to the Great Lakes in the form of ice waves.

Posted on Feb. 19, 2014 at 5:03 p.m.

I had never heard of ice waves until a friend shared a collection of images on Facebook. Even after reading about their formation I find it hard to comprehend that we are seeing these in the northern Great Lakes.

What a winter it has been.

A little closer to home at the Indiana Dunes we are seeing extensive icing along the lake and in Michigan City around the light house as well. View a gallery here.

As February flows into March we are bound to put this winter behind us. I'm pretty sure we will remember the winter of 2014 for a long time to come.
