ELKHART — A two-vehicle accident sent one driver to Elkhart General Hospital and another to the Elkhart County Jail on Monday, Jan. 13.

Just before 4 p.m. Monday, Ben Mireles, 30, of South Bend, rear-ended a vehicle driven by Stephanie Johnson of Elkhart at the intersection of U.S. 20 and Nappanee Street in Elkhart, the Indiana State Police said in a press release.

Johnson complained of head pain and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for overnight observation.

Indiana State Trooper Gretchen Deal came upon the crash after it occurred. During her investigation, she learned that Mireles had a suspended learner's permit and had been drinking prior to the crash, the press release said. A certified blood alcohol contest test showed that he had a BAC of .13 percent.

Mireles was arrested on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated and driving while suspended and booked into the Elkhart County Jail.
