GOSHEN — A family’s pet cat was taken to the veterinarian after a garage fire that occurred on S.R. 15, south of Goshen, on Sunday, Nov. 24.
The Elkhart Township Fire Department was called to 66268 S.R. 15 to a garage fire before noon Sunday, an Elkhart County dispatcher confirmed. The fire was contained to the garage and breezeway area.
Jeremy Klinedinst and his 2-year-old son Jaxon were home at the time but managed to escape the fire without injury. The family’s pet dog and cat were also in the home. The dog also escaped uninjured, while the cat was taken to the vet to be treated for smoke inhalation, according to Courtney Klinedinst, Jeremy Klinedinst’s wife. She was at work when the blaze began.
The section of S.R. 15 between C.R. 40 and C.R. 42 is closed to traffic. Drivers should avoid the area.
Klinedinst said he had been charging the family’s four-wheeler in the garage.
“They were going to go on the four-wheeler and play in the snow this afternoon,” Courtney Klinedinst said. “When he went back inside he just heard a big explosion.”
Elkhart Township Assitant Chief Lee Rohn, however, could not confirm the source of the fire and said the cause remains under investigation at this point.
The Elkhart Township Fire Department was assisted by the New Paris and Bremen Township fire departments.
