SYRACUSE — A Ligonier man remained hospitalized Thursday afternoon after suffering serious injuries in a Wednesday evening car crash.

Vincente Martinez, 23, was listed in critical condition at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Martinez was a passenger in a 2008 Dodge sedan heading southbound on U.S. 33 near C.R. 50 around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, when the car crossed the center line, ran off the road into a ditch and rolled several times, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Martinez was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He suffered a serious head injury and was airlifted to Parkview Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, Mario Alberto Reyes, 25, also of Ligonier, died at the scene. Reyes had been wearing a seat belt, according to the sheriff’s department.

An Elkhart County dispatcher confirmed that a passing driver initially called 911 and reported that the Dodge and another vehicle had been racing down the road before the crash.

The Elkhart County Crash Investigation Team continues to investigate the incident.
