The 2008 Dodge sedan was moving southbound at 5:45 p.m. near C.R. 50 when it crossed the center line, ran off the road into a ditch and rolled several times, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

One passenger, Vincente Martinez, 23, also of Ligonier, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. He was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne to be treated for a serious head injury, the release said.

An Elkhart dispatcher confirmed that a passing driver initially called 911 and said the Dodge and one other car were racing down the road before the crash happened.

The sheriff's department Crash Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the incident, the news release said.
