Car crash, fire

The incident left West Lexington Avenue on Elkhart's west side closed for part of Saturday morning.

ELKHART — A car crash and fire Saturday morning left a street west of downtown closed.

The car, which appeared to be westbound, went off the street and rolled into a wooded area in the 700 block of West Lexington Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. After the impact, the car came to rest on the passenger side and caught fire, witnesses in the area said.

Several bystanders came to the aid of the driver, a woman, and helped her get out. Harvey Cunningham of Elkhart said he and three other men tried to right the car, then helped pull the woman climb out the driver side door. Other bystanders tried to extinguish the blaze with home fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived.

The driver was attended to by emergency medical personnel called to the scene.
