ELKHART — An icy bridge was to blame in fatal a two-vehicle crash on the north side of Elkhart County.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and the Cleveland and Osolo Township Fire Departments were called at 8:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, to C.R. 5 on the Indiana Toll Road overpass, according to Elkhart County dispatch.

Two women died in the crash, said Patrolman Evan Boggs of the sheriff’s department.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, Dawn Leatherman, 47, of Elkhart was driving a black SUV north on C.R. 5 when her vehicle struck the bridge’s cement barrier before swerving across the center line.

The SUV crashed into a pickup truck heading south on C.R. 5.

The passenger in the SUV, Alice Barnes, 70, of Elkhart, was pronounced dead at the scene. Leatherman was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Both women died from internal injuries, according to the press release.

The truck’s driver, Ryan Eull, 32, of Niles, Mich., was not injured.

Boggs said the overpass was covered in ice Friday morning, causing the SUV to slide before hitting the barrier and the pickup truck.

Medflight was called to the scene but did not transport anyone. The overpass was closed several hours, and was reopened in the early afternoon.

The South Bend Police Department stated in a press release that U.S. 20 was ice-covered and that multiple accidents were reported along the road between Ironwood Road and U.S. 31 Friday morning.

The police department encouraged drivers to slow down, particularly when driving in freezing temperatures.
