ELKHART — The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office has filed formal charges Wednesday, Sept. 11, against a man accused of shooting and killing two men east of downtown Elkhart on Sept. 5.
Kevin Moore, 28, of Elkhart, has been charged with two counts of murder, according to court files. The charge of murder, a felony, carries a sentence of 45 to 65 years in prison.
Moore was arrested on preliminary charges of murder and battery hours after police responded to reports of a shooting at Saleh’s Market, 410 Middlebury St.
Two employees —Jagtar Bhatti, 55, and Pawan Singh, 20— were pronounced dead at the scene. The Elkhart County coroner determined that both men died of a single gunshot wound and ruled the deaths homicides.
Moore was previously arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving without an operator’s license. He was also sentenced to prison on charges of battery in 2009, according to files from the Indiana Department of Correction.
Moore’s initial hearing has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in Elkhart Circuit Court, according to court files.
