NEW PARIS — A New Paris teen who was badly injured in a weekend boating accident on Lake Wawasee is recuperating at Fort Wayne’s Parkview Hospital.

Riley Wagner, 16, was transferred to Parkview from IU Health Goshen on Sunday, July 7. A Parkview spokeswoman said Wagner is now listed in “fair” condition.

Wagner was riding a boat driven by Marshall Dillon, 18, when it accelerated out of control and flew off onto land. Wagner was thrown off the boat and landed about 50 feet away, according to a press release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Jerry Hoerdt, an officer with the DNR’s law enforcement division, said that Wagner was doing better and was expected to make full recovery.

The DNR will continue to investigate the incident, but evidence suggests a malfunction in the boat made it accelerate without the driver being able to control it, said Hoerdt. The investigating officer in the case met with the manufacturer to pinpoint what went wrong with the boat.

“The way things sound there wasn’t much (the driver) could do,” Hoerdt said.

The boat and property sustained damage but it was minor. Hoerdt said the boat will be driveable once it’s fixed.
