ELKHART — A girl injured in a house fire Saturday, May 4, remains in serious condition.

Leigha Allen, 9, was flown to the Bronson Burn and Wound Center in Kalamazoo, Mich., with serious burns to her face and arms after a house on fire at 22983 Leslie Lane.

Firefighters responded at about 10 p.m. to the fire. Don Mansell, fire chief of the Concord Township Fire Department, said investigators are still talking with the homeowners and trying to determine the cause of the fire.

All five people in the house at the time escaped the fire, but Allen and her brother, Chaz Allen, were taken to the hospital. Chaz Allen was treated and released from Elkhart General Hospital.

The children were staying at the house of James and Alisa Bennett. The Bennetts had volunteered to look after the children because their mother had to go to her oldest daughter’s volleyball tournament.

The Bennetts have found a place to live temporarily with family and are working with their insurance company to repair their home.

Donations can be sent to Beulah Missionary Church marked for the Allen family to help them cover medical bills for the Allens’ treatment.
