ELKHART — Elkhart County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection to the shooting death of an Elkhart man early Saturday morning, April 20.

Terry L. Sheets Jr., 26, of Elkhart, was arrested Saturday on a preliminary charge of murder, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Matthew Bark, 24, of Elkhart died from a gunshot wound following an argument Saturday morning

Sheriff’s deputies discovered Bark when they were sent to a disturbance at 2801 Toledo Road, Apt. 1517, at 1:29 a.m. Saturday, said sheriff’s Capt. James Bradberry.

The officers found that two men, one of them Bark, had been arguing in the apartment and Bark was shot.

Bark was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend and died there.

Following further investigation sheriff’s detectives identified Sheets as the second man involved in the argument. He is being held at the Elkhart County Jail, according to information from the sheriff’s department.

Bradberry said Saturday afternoon that it was too early in the investigation to say if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Belén Gutierrez, who lives in an apartment near where the shooting occurred, said that she had been falling asleep while watching TV when the shooting happened. She had heard some arguing, though it wasn’t too loud, she said, and then two gunshots. A few minutes later, police and ambulances arrived, she said.

“We don’t usually see arguing or any type of violence here,” she said.
