GOSHEN — A New Paris man died after being hit by a train moving through Goshen about 50 mph, according to police.

Police were called at 7:54 p.m. Sunday, April 7, to the area of First Street and River Avenue, according to a press release.

Thomas D. Griffis, 39, of 18254 U.S. 6, New Paris, died. “Alcohol consumption by the decedent is believed to have been a factor in this incident,” the press release from police stated.

Elkhart County Deputy Coroner James Elliott ruled Griffis’ manner of death a suicide.

The train was stopped for more than 2 1/2 hours while emergency personnel conducted an investigation. Griffis’ family was notified and police made the name public about 12:30 a.m. Monday, April 7.

An official from Norfolk Southern confirmed the train involved in the incident had four locomotives and was pulling 144 cars. Two people who were on the train at the time were uninjured.
