SOUTH BEND — An Elkhart man pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana on Friday, March 29.
Harry Kiste, 55, was arrested Sept. 17, 2012, in Elkhart County, according to information provided by the Elkhart County Jail website.
Kiste was convicted in 1996 of attempted criminal sexual conduct in Cassopolis, Mich. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to register as a sex offender. In 2007 he pleaded guilty to failure to comply after he had failed to register and was sent to prison. When he was released in 2011, Kiste registered as a sex offender in Michigan, but moved to Indiana and failed to register again, said Mary Hatton, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Charges in 2012 were filed as a result of an investigation by the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
The judge recommended that the district court accept the tendered guilty plea, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Sentencing has been scheduled for June 27.
