ELKHART — The vehicle in which Maria Ramirez was riding when a fatal accident occurred Friday morning had spun out of control before crashing with an SUV on the other side of the road, according to an accident report.

Ramirez, 14 and Christian Castro, 19, were traveling north on John Weaver Parkway in a white Pontiac Grand Prix when the car spun out of control, crossed a grass median and landed sideways in the path of an SUV driven by Laura Luthringer, 47. The SUV struck the passenger side of the vehicle. Police are still investigating why the car spun onto the other vehicle's path.

Castro was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend in critical condition. He was listed in good condition as of Tuesday afternoon, and he was no longer listed in the hospital as of Thursday.

Luthringer had non-incapacitating injuries and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital to be treated.

The accident happened around 7:40 a.m. between C.R. 6 and C.R. 10.

Editor's note: The original version of this story said the accident happened at 7:40 p.m., but that was incorrect. We regret the error.
