The man airlifted after his SUV crashed into a tree in Elkhart Sunday evening is listed in serious at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

The Goshen man who was airlifted to Memorial Hospital of South Bend after his vehicle hit a tree Sunday night was listed in serious condition Monday.

Salvador Cortez, 23, was driving south on C.R. 9, north of C.R. 126, around 8 p.m. Sunday when his 2002 GMC Envoy went off the road and hit a mailbox, came back onto the road and then left the roadway again, hitting a tree on the driver’s side.

Cortez was airlifted to Memorial with possible head injuries.

A passenger in Cortez’s vehicle was not injured. No citations were issued at the scene.
