ELKHART — Three people, including one firefighter, were hospitalized after a fire broke out at Fiber-Tron Trailers Corp., 29421 Old U.S. 33 West, Monday afternoon.
According to Baugo Township Fire Department Chief Chad Carey, the fire department responded to reports of a heavy structure fire with black smoke at Fiber-Tron just before 3 p.m.
Two people inside the building at the time of the fire were transported to the hospital. Carey did not know the extent of their injuries. Carey said that a Cleveland Township firefighter was also hospitalized for heat exhaustion.
Upon arrival, thick black smoke was pouring out of the opened garage doors around the building. According to Carey, the fire may have been caused by a small explosion inside the building, which stores fiberglass products for trailers.
As of 4:30 p.m., Carey said the fire departments continued to comb through the building to search for exposed chemicals but had not yet found any. Damage from the fire and smoke appeared to be mostly contained to the container where the fire started, the ceiling and the building’s insulation.
Cleveland Township, Osceola Township, Wakarusa and Elkhart City fire departments assisted at the scene.
