OSCEOLA — A fire this morning, April 27, at DC Meats, 1711 Lincolnway W., damaged the smokehouse but won’t affect retail operations, according to Stephen Gill, the butcher shop’s owner.

Gill said an employee noticed the fire in the smokehouse, at the rear of the business, around 10:30 a.m. Emergency crews were called in at 10:58 a.m.

Brian Mayo, assistant chief of the Penn Township Fire Department, said authorities didn’t know the cause of the fire yet but that an investigator would be looking into it.

Lincolnway West is closed temporarily while fire crews are at the scene. The call drew firefighters from five agencies — the town of Osceola, Penn and Clay townships from St. Joseph County and Baugo and Cleveland townships from Elkhart County.
