Jimtown survives gritty battle with Rochester

A squad that had scored 109 points in its last two games met its mirror image, a Rochester team that can also run the ball up the perimeter and play hard-nosed, lock-down defense.
By the grace of key turnovers and gutsy running from Nik Olson and Casey Adams, Jimtown made just enough plays to get by. The Jimmies (9-2) pushed out a 14-6 win over host Rochester (8-3) to move on to the Class 3A sectional championship.
Olson and Adams combined for 203 of Jimtown’s 263 total yards, helped in part by an offensive line that is gelling at just the right time in the season. Olson’s third-quarter score gave the Jimmies a sliver of breathing room when Rochester struck late in the fourth.
But for as hard as the Jimmies worked to build the comfortable lead they’re accustomed to, three turnovers prevented them from doing so. One fumble ended a 50-yard drive. Jimtown forced a 3-and-out but then threw and interception on the following drive.
“When we turn the ball over three times, things don’t flow,” Jimtown coach Mike Campbell said. “We never got that big play. We wanted a long, sustained drive, and we didn’t really get it tonight.”
Rochester forced Jimtown to adjusted its game plan, but the Jimmies responded well enough to face Twin Lakes next week. A pair of interceptions from Marquis Schieber and Cody Spurgeon helped get them there.
“We’re in the sectional championship,” Campbell said. “That was our goal all year.”
