With No. 5-ranked Jimtown (8-2) having early success moving the ball on the wing side, the Vikings (5-5) began over-shifting defenders to that side.
That’s when the Jimmies used counters and misdirection plays to keep the chains moving at “Death Valley” on the way to earning the right to play Friday, Nov. 1 at Rochester (8-2).
“We saw what they were doing upfront and took advantage of it,” said Jimtown head coach Mike Campbell. “They shifted their whole front to our wing, so we went the other way.
“Most of our big runs in the second half were on counters.”
On a night when the Jimmies had 338 rushing yards, there were runs by 43 and 20 yards by Casey Adams, 32, 36 and 20 by Nik Olson and 35 and 33 by Tyler Lundy.
Halfback Olson ran for 135 yards, fullback Adams 124 and wingback Lundy 80. Adams crossed the goal line four times, Olson twice and Lundy once while quarterback Marquis Schieber also tallied a Jimmie TD.
“Our offensive line did a great job and our backs did a great job of breaking tackles,” said Campbell. “Give Casey (Adams), Nik (Olson) and Tyler (Lundy) room and they can make you pay a little bit. Marquis (Schieber) did a nice job of controlling the tempo of the game.”
The Jimmies scored eight rushing touchdowns against the Vikings — two in each quarter and six unanswered to get out to a 39-0 lead.
Jimtown benefitted from short fields throughout the night as they improved to 69-9 overall in sectional games and 92-27 in all IHSAA tournament games.
“Our field position was pretty fortunate.”
A combination of defensive takeaways and stops and special teams, allowed the Jimmies to continually start scoring drives on short fields. \
The first six drives began at the TV 5 (after an interception by nose tackle Cody Spurgeon), TV 40, 50 (after a fumble recovery by Adam Gill), TV 42 (after a very short punt by the Vikings), TV 27 (after a 57-yard kickoff return by Olson) and TV 43 (after the fourth-down stop by Jimtown).
Tippecanoe Valley quarterback Ben Shriver, son of head coach Jeff Shriver, completed 19-of-31 passes for 319 yards, including nine for 204 yards to Tanner Andrews. Shriver tossed scoring aerials to Andrews, Jarred Littlejohn and Nolan Sponseller in the second half.
