The National Weather Service confirmed that reports of snow sightings were coming in from across northern Indiana Wednesday.
The rain and snow showers will likely continue for the rest of the week with high temperatures only reaching the low- to mid-40s, according to the National Weather Service.
The clouds and precipitation should clear out of the area for the weekend with sunshine and high temperatures around 50 degrees expected for Saturday and Sunday.
Snowfall in mid- to late-October is not uncommon, an Accuweather.com meteorologist said.
According to climate reports for the South Bend area, October snowfall was reported in 2011 when traces of snow were seen on Oct. 29 and in 2009 with small amounts of snow on Oct. 15, said Brian Edwards, a meteorologist with Accuweather.com.
Edwards said almost an inch of snow was reported in the area on Oct. 27, 2008.
