ELKHART — Leona (Zeman) Thornton, 91, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013.
She was born Jan. 15, 1922, in South Bend, to Samuel and Sophie Bessie (Cominsky) Zeman. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Robert Thornton, for 68 years. They were married Aug. 15, 1941; he died Aug. 7, 2009.
Leona graduated from Elkhart High School in 1940. She was a homemaker and a member of Temple Beth-El, South Bend. Leona was past president of Temple Israel Sisterhood in Elkhart. She enjoyed cooking and loved her family dearly.
Leona is survived by sons Peter Stephan (Kathryn) Thornton and Michael Kent Thornton, both of Elkhart; grandsons Johnathan Pierson Thornton and Derek Gordon (Joni) Light; and two great-grandchildren, Drake and Gabby Light.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Anne Davidson, Fannie Counce and Jackie Feldman.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery.
