ELKHART — Doug Brown, 67, of Elkhart, passed away Oct. 8, 2013, from cancer.
Doug was born in Glendale, Calif., on June 20, 1946.
Doug’s family moved to Elkhart in 1948, where he lived until his death. Doug graduated from Elkhart High School in 1964, where he lettered in football and track and was a starter on the 1963 state football championship team. Doug also played football at Ball State University, from which he graduated in 1971.
Doug was a physical education teacher and coach of basketball, volleyball and softball at St. Thomas. During Doug’s tenure, St. Thomas won several Indiana State Presidential Physical Fitness Championships. Doug coached football at Brookdale and was an assistant football and girls track coach at Elkhart Central. Doug was on the staff at Elkhart Central and Ivy Tech. For 20 years Doug was an IHSAA umpire for girls softball. One of the greatest joys of Doug’s life was his work as an usher for Notre Dame sporting events, especially football, where he was a supervisor and served for 37 consecutive years.
Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Gwenneth Mangum; and his grandparents, Glenn and Martha Rodgers.
Doug is survived by his stepfather, Robert Mangum of Goshen; and sister Cheryl (David) Fradenburg of Richmond.
Doug was a member of Beulah Missionary Church.
Visitation will be at Beulah Missionary Church, 57595 Old C.R. 17, Goshen, on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, between 4 and 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013. There will be a lunch following for all in attendance. Officiating will be Beulah’s senior pastor, Dr. Brent Poe, who is also a first cousin of Doug’s.
Memorials may be given to Beulah Missionary Church.
