ELKHART — Leah Joan Smith, 82, of Elkhart, died Thursday, Oct. 3, at Elkhart Hospice House.
Leah was born July 10, 1931, to the late Lester and Violet (Hartranft) Spry.
She was a lifetime resident of Elkhart.
Surviving are her children, Rick Smith (Jan), Mark Smith of Middlebury and Susan Handgen; grandchildren Robert (Shana), Andrew (Roswitha), Dayne and Bryce Smith, Matthew Smith of Middlebury, Christopher and Elizabeth Handgen, both of Elkhart, Kelly (Justin) Cooper, Corrina (Mike) Smith-Leonard and Aubren (Patrick) Phillips; five great-grandchildren; siblings Vera Simons and Thomas (Cathy) Spry, both of Elkhart, and Lester Jr. (Kathy) and John (Ethel) Spry; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend, Jerry McNutt.
She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Spry, grandson Ryan Handgen; and beloved companion, William Mowery.
Leah retired from KJ Miller Corp. in Elkhart and was a lifetime member of Women of the Moose. She enjoyed all types of crafts and had a special talent in home decorating and flower arrangements. Leah created the flowers for several of her family’s weddings and loved giving gifts she created. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, cooking, traveling and attending area flea markets and festivals. Leah had a contagious smile and was a wonderful inspiration of constant happiness to her family and friends.
In accordance with Leah’s wishes there will be no funeral or memorial service. Remembering Leah and her family in your thoughts and prayers would be appreciated. The absence of her unconditional love and presence will leave a grave void in the lives of her loved ones.
