ST. JOSEPH, Mich. — Ira Lee Schwyn, 86, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in St. Joseph.
Ira was born Oct. 29, 1926, in Elkhart, Ind., to William “Bill” and Ruth (Bickel) Schwyn.
After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. Upon returning from the war, Ira started working as a union plaster worker. He was a member of the Brick Layers Union and a lifetime member of the American Legion in Coloma.
Ira was an avid fisherman and he loved spending time on Rush Lake. He enjoyed playing dominos and listening to music. He loved singing and is now singing in heaven.
He married Esther Shirley in 1948. He married Luanne Sipreff in 1957.
Ira is survived by his children, Lori Struble, Shelly Schwyn, Katy Schwyn and Carla LaCounte of Elkhart and Jeffery (Tracey) Schwyn; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and longtime companion Corinne King.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Hochstetler.
