The scammer or scammers are making phone calls to people advising them that they have placed second or third in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes and therefore won several hundred thousand dollars, according to ISP. The victims are then advised to wire money via Western Union to cover taxes and processing fees.
Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes only selects winners from those who enter and never contacts winners by phone. Publisher’s Clearinghouse also does not require winners to pay up-front.
Anyone who receives a call should check the phone number and take note of the area code. Calls received in southeastern Indiana have come from phone numbers in the “876” Jamaican area code.
Residents should be skeptical of calls requesting for money to be sent in order for a person to receive a cash prize. If a victim of a scam sends money, “it’s nearly impossible for U.S. law enforcement to recover the money and locate the scammers. If the money is sent outside the United States, there is absolutely nothing U.S. law enforcement can do,” according to ISP.
