ELKHART — Galen Bontrager, 88, of Elkhart went home to be with the Lord at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, in his residence, surrounded by his family.
Galen was born June 29, 1925, in LaGrange to Neri and Flora Bontrager.
He married Beverly Herrli on May 31, 1945.
She survives along with his daughters, Gayle (Craig) Thielen of Goshen and Beth (Wayne) Key of Elkhart; brother Gordon DeWayne (Judy) Bontrager of Plantation, Fla.; sisters Laurene Leinbach of Goshen and Doris Bontrager of Plantation; grandchildren Christi (Andy) Rucker, Jennifer (John) Martin, Lon Eric Smith and Crystal Key; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Glendon Bontrager; and a sister, Rubye Bontrager.
He graduated from Concord High School.
Galen proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Galen was co-owner of Bontrager and Sons Construction. After retiring, he joined his wife in operating Queen Bee Puppets. For 15 years he directed “God’s Handful” puppet team.
He enjoyed camping, operating his boat and waterskiing. Galen loved spending time with his family and vacationing in Florida.
Galen attended Zion Missionary Church, where he sang in the choir and with the male quartet. Over the years he had been involved with different youth ministries including Youth for Christ.
Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. The service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Zion Missionary Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
