The Michiana Area Council of Governments will continue to offer rides with subsidized fare rates starting at $2 exclusively to cardholding Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, riders Monday, Aug. 19. Because of the limited number of vehicles available, rides must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. The announcement came after Yellow Cab of Elkhart County discontinued service through MACOG on Thursday, Aug. 15, because of financial difficulties.
“We have been contacting each of our ADA clients and letting them know that they can still schedule rides for Monday,” MACOG executive director Sandra Seanor said. “This was a bit of a surprise to us as well.”
Yellow Cab owner Kerry Clear said Thursday that his company decided to stop offering rides with fares subsidized by MACOG because of high operating costs. Clear said he could not come to a compromise with the council to raise prices for rides.
Complying with federal regulations, MACOG will continue to offer service to clients with disabilities. There will likely be two to four vehicles traveling in the area Monday, Seanor said.
“This is very important to us,” Seanor said. “We take our jobs seriously, so it’s extremely important to us. We’re very disappointed that the current vendor ended business, but it is what it is, and it is our jobs to do what we can for our ADA riders.”
ADA riders can call 674-8894 to schedule a ride for Monday. Rides must be scheduled 24 hours in advance of service between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. ADA riders may be taken during the same hours that the Interurban Trolley operates: from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.
