A passerby called 911 and reported smoke from the part of the former Goshen Inn, 1375 Lincolnway East, at 8:02 p.m. All Goshen fire stations responded. A total of about 20 firefighters helped fight the fire, according to Chief Inspector Mike Happer.
The restaurant that was known as Crackers Lounge and The Blue Room had extensive damage, but the fire didn’t go through the roof, Happer said. Firefighters were working against the fire during a thunderstorm that prompted tornado sirens for the second time in less than a week. About 20 firefighters and seven fire vehicles were at the scene, Happer said.
It took 45 minutes to an hour to bring the fire under control.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. “We never make any guesses,” Happer said.
He said the investigation will continue Tuesday morning, Aug. 13.
The hotel and restaurant haven’t been used for a number of years. The former owner of the hotel was killed there in October 2011.
