Elkhart police investigating alleged violent home invasion

• Officers were notified of an infant with symptoms of Shaken Baby Syndrome, according to a press release from the police department. The child was being treated at a local hospital and police arrested Andrew Hamilton, 24, of Elkhart, following an investigation.
Hamilton was arrested on a preliminary charge of battery causing a serious bodily injury to a victim under 14 years of age, a Class B felony. He is booked at the Elkhart County Jail without a bond.
• Officers were dispatched Friday morning to the 900 block of Hester Street in reference to a welfare check and found out that a man had been a victim of a home invasion the night before.
Police said a person called the police department Friday morning and told them a friend who lives on the 900 block of Hester Street had called saying he couldn’t breathe.
Police found the victim confined in his house since about 10 p.m. He told police he had been a victim of a home invasion and that he had been confined in the house since 10 p.m. Thursday.
The victim has minor injuries. Police are still looking for a suspect in the case.
• Police arrested Joel Richardson, 34, of Elkhart, on a preliminary charge of child molesting, a Class A felony, Thursday. According to the probable cause affidavit filed for Richardson’s arrest, the victim of the assault was brought to the police station Aug. 5, and told police Richardson picked her up from a relative’s house in Edwardsburg and drove around before going to his apartment.
Richardson agreed to an interview with the police department, in which he admitted to knowing the victim and to having performed sexual acts with the victim. He was arrested and booked at the Elkhart County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
