Purvi Patel, 32, of Granger, was arrested on a preliminary charge of feticide after the body of an infant was found outside of a Mishawaka restaurant Saturday night (photo provided).
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Cmdr. Tim Corbett issued a news release Monday night saying 32-year-old Purvi Patel of Granger had been arrested and the investigation was continuing. It was not immediately known where Patel was being held or whether she had an attorney. The telephone listing for her had been disconnected.
According to WNDU-TV, The Elkhart Truth’s reporting partners, Patel admitted herself to the ER at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center at approximately 11:40 p.m. Saturday. Though she was not forthcoming at first, she eventually told police that the infant was located in a dumpster near the Super Target in the University Crossing Shopping Center, 425 E. University Drive, Mishawaka. Police said they found the body inside a bag in a dumpster behind Moe’s Southwest Grill late Saturday.
An autopsy was conducted on the infant around 9:15 a.m. Monday. Because the infant is so small, a forensic pathologist is waiting for microscopic and toxicology reports to determine if the baby was delivered stillborn or alive.
Formal charges are expected within the next two days. The news release says feticide is defined as a person who knowingly or intentionally terminates a pregnancy with an intention other than to produce a live birth. It carries up to 20 years in prison.
