In a statement after the vote Thursday, July 11, she called the measure “a step in the right direction toward providing critical support and assistance for Hoosier farmers.”
House lawmakers removed the food stamps program from the bill, which accounts for the majority of the measure’s original price tag. Walorski touted the change.
“Splitting the bill allows lawmakers to responsibly assess and debate priorities and funding levels for food stamp policy and agriculture assistance,” she said in her statement. “These are two separate discussions the American people deserve to hear from Congress, and today’s passing vote finally moves the ball down the court for the agriculture industry.”
The Senate version of the farm bill, approved in June, retained the food stamps program. Both Indiana’s U.S. senators, Republican Dan Coats and Democrat Joe Donnelly, voted for it.
