The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners has awarded a $339,984 contract for the bridgework to Northern Indiana Construction, a Mishawaka company that is working on the Prairie Street Bridge near Waterfall Drive in Elkhart. The company will replace the beams and deck on the two-lane bridge over Christiana Creek.
The Simonton Street Bridge project came in roughly $220,000 under budget. The commissioners had approved $550,000 in June for construction plus another $10,000 for bridge inspection services.
Northern Indiana Construction has not given the countyís highway department an exact schedule for construction, but county engineer Tom Rushlow expects work to begin as early as July 22. Rushlow said the contractor has indicated that construction could be delayed for a week or two while crews await the arrival of new beams for the bridge. Construction will close the bridge for about three months.
