Four companies compete for countys road paving contract

The countyís highway department is reviewing bids from four contractors that submitted estimates for the roadwork with totals as low as $2.5 million and as high as $2.9 million. The bids were separated into five groups to allow the county to easily evaluate the offers.
Niblock Excavating Inc. in Bristol submitted the lowest bid at $430,623 for Group 1; $562,582 for Group 2; $359,284 for Group 3; $583,595 for Group 4; and $571,410 for Group 5, for a total of $2.5 million.
Walsh and Kelly Inc., which has offices in South Bend and Griffith, included a bid of $453,936 for Group 1; $644,971 for Group 2; $346,604 for Group 3; $588,789 for Group 4; and $627,762 for Group 5, for a total of $2.6 million.
Phend and Brown Inc., based in Milford, proposed of a bid of $452,521 for Group 1; $654,624 for Group 2; $359,671 for Group 3; $623,823 for Group 4; and $770,673 for Group 5, for a total of $2.8 million.
The highest bid came from Rieth Riley in Goshen with an offer of $422,899 for Group 1; $841,223 for Group 2; $328,299 for Group 3; $575,859 for Group 4; and $815,802 for Group 5, for a total of $2.9 million.
Highway department manager Jeff Taylor said he expects to have a recommendation for the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners within the next two weeks.
