The telethon, one of America’s longest-standing fundraising events, had been aired for the last 48 years by local stations and network affiliates. MDA announced that it will join with ABC this fall, marking the telethon’s first time being broadcast by a single network.
Elkhart’s Fox 28 has aired local contributions to the show for 37 years, the company wrote in a programming note.
“We are disappointed,” the station wrote in the note. “WSJV and MDA made a heck of a team. We’ve gotten to know families, helped hundreds of kids, and made some very special and wonderful friends.”
Fox 28 said it hopes to still find ways to support MDA and its local families.
The show traditionally ran on Labor Day and was hosted by Jerry Lewis. The show will air this year as a two-hour special on Sept. 1.
MDA is the world’s leading nonprofit health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and other neuromuscular diseases.
