The money for mowing and demolition would come from the county’s environmental special projects fund, an account that originally included money generated by the landfill and later by a tax increment financing district set up in the area.
“In order to be demolished, the planning department administers the county’s unsafe building ordinance, and there’s usually a notice and a whole process they go through including a hearing with the Board of Zoning Appeals hearing officer who issues the order for the structure to be demolished,” county administrator Tom Byers explained.
The five buildings in Elkhart County that will be demolished are located at 22257 C.R. 6, 65821 C.R. 31, 25408 C.R. 26, 54260 Baldwin Court and 25236 Medford St.
