James Jarosak, 52, was arrested on preliminary charges of manufacturing meth, battery and burglary.
According to the probable cause affidavit in Jarosak’s case, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was called to the 26000 block of Parkview Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Friday. The resident at the house said she had let Jarosak into her detached garage because he was taking items he said he had left in house. The previous tenant had let Jarosak use some space of the garage to store some of his items.
The victim told police Friday afternoon was the third time Jarosak had asked her for permission to go into her garage. He loaded some items in his car and then went to a store for about an hour before going back to the garage.
The victim saw Jarosak loading items into his car for a while, but then he went back into the garage and did not go out for more than 30 minutes.
The resident said she went to the garage door but it was locked. When she knocked Jarosak took about a minute to open the door, and she saw smoke coming from the doorway. She ran back into her house and shut the front door, but Jarosak kicked it open and tried to grab the victim’s phone when he saw it in her hand.
Jarosak yelled insults at the victim, pushed her to the ground and grabbed her keys from her purse before running out the house into a wooded area behind the residence.
When police arrived they found the garage door had a padlock, and they had to force the door open. Officers found a one-pot meth lab inside the garage and called the Indiana State Police to dispose of it.
Jarosak was found, arrested and booked in the Elkhart County Jail at about 10 p.m. Friday on a $75,000 bond, according to the jail’s website.
Formal charges had not been filed against Jarosak as of Monday afternoon.
