Capt. Norma Alber, who oversees the Elkhart County Jail, has been demoted to the rank of Detective II, a position she held for about seven years before becoming corrections captain, said Sheriff Brad Rogers.
The announcement was made Thursday, June 13, during the sheriff’s department’s Merit Board public meeting.
The demotion was voluntary, meaning Alber asked to be transferred to the detective bureau, Rogers said.
Alber has worked at the sheriff’s department for the last 19 years, having started out in the corrections division before being promoted to the rank of sergeant. In 1996, Alber became a police officer and in 2003 she was given the position of detective.
Alber was appointed to the position of corrections captain in December 2010, Rogers said. The demotion will become effective beginning next week.
Rogers said Lt. John Perry will serve as temporary commander until the department makes a permanent appointment.
“We want to make sure there is a smooth transition, that things are getting done, security is maintained and the public is served.”
The sheriff and undersheriff will work together in the next few weeks to review potential candidates to fill the position.
