The bridge has been closed since January while its beams are replaced, the sidewalk is widened and new lights are added. The bridge is scheduled to reopen by Aug. 2.
Elkhart County Highway Department Manager Jeff Taylor told the county commissioners Monday, June 3, that the contract to finish construction on the bridge ends Aug. 2, but he “would be surprised if it goes that long.” The bridge near Waterfall Drive was closed in January to replace its beams, install new lighting and widen the sidewalks.
“It’s coming along real good,” Taylor said. “We have reports from Rick Easton, our inspector out there, that the contractor is doing an excellent job and should be finished on time.”
The project’s contractor, Northern Indiana Construction, worked on the bridge’s beams in April, and Taylor expects the structure’s deck and approaches to be completed this week. Crews will also begin working on the bridge’s sidewalks.
The highway department has rerouted traffic during construction from Prairie Street to East Jackson Boulevard to Goshen Avenue to Indiana Avenue and back to Prairie Street.
