Now the 31-year-old Wright will lead the Eddies as the man in charge.
Wright, a member of the Edwardsburg staff for the past seven years, was named as the program’s top man Tuesday, May 21. Wright served six years as JV coach and one year as freshman coach under three head coaches.
“We’ve had great kids who want to play and want to get better,” said Wright. “We want to keep that going.”
Wright, who had a JV coaching mark of 74-45, including 17-3 in 2012-13, expects five players back from a 15-6 varsity squad — incoming seniors Dylan Hulett and Grant Szalewski, juniors Jackson Gaideski and Joe Queener and sophomore Dante Razzano.
“Guys will have a step into different roles,” said Wright. “We’ll evaluate it over the summer and see where we are come November.”
Wright, an Edwardsburg social studies teacher, said academics will continue to be a priority.
“A lot of our kids are motivated to do well in the classroom,” said Wright.
As for his staff, Wright said he expects Sean Jesse, Edwardsburg’s freshmen coach this winter, to return. There will be a search for a third coach.
Wright, the son of former Edwardsburg basketball and Cassopolis basketball and football coach Ken Wright, is a 2000 Cassopolis Ross Beatty High School graduate. He did his internship at Edwardsburg in the fall of 2004 and graduated from Western Michigan University that winter. He was hired by Edwardsburg schools in 2005 and has helped brothers Rob and Kenny Wright coach junior high football and basketball in the system.
Steve and Rebecca Wright reside in South Bend and have a 2 1/2-year-old daughter named Mia.
