The Elkhart County Board of Zoning Appeals told Barbara Herzberg on Thursday, May 16, that she will no longer be able to operate a business out of her home at 56576 Via Giovanni where she has lived for the past 16 years.
The county’s planning and zoning department received a complaint in April that Herzberg was operating a commercial greenhouse at her home in violation of her subdivision’s covenants. She has been selling flowers and plants to individual clients and floral shops in the area. She also delivers basil, dill and other herbs to local restaurants.
“That’s sort of my small, little niche in the world,” Herzberg told the BZA members. “It’s not a retail thing.”
The BZA members told Herzberg that she must remove her stock of plants from the greenhouse by Nov. 1 and gave her a deadline of Dec. 31 to dismantle the structure in her backyard.
