Intera Credit Union in Goshen is hosting a shredding event Friday, May 17, and the following day at its offices at 300 W. Lincoln Ave.
Free shredding for up to 50 pounds of paper will be available from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Friday. Hours on Saturday, May 18, are from 9 to 11 a.m.
A fee will be charged for people bringing more than 50 pounds of paper.
On Wednesday, May 22, the city of Elkhart, along with Integra Certified Document Destruction and the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, will host “Clean Your Files Day” at Civic Plaza in downtown Elkhart. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Integra will take care of up to 10 boxes of paper free of charge. Each additional box will cost $3. Boxes should be no larger than a typical file box.
The city has sponsored similar events over the past ten years, and the turnout in 2012 was among the biggest when an estimated 400 people dropped off 40,395 pounds of paper, according to Megan Kolaczyk, the city’s environmental utility coordinator.
That amount of paper, Kolaczyk said, equaled 343 trees or 61 cubic yards of landfill space.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the event can call Kolaczyk at 293-2572.
