The Elkhart County commissioners signed a letter of support Monday, May 6, for Millersburg to seek a federal grant that would cover at least part of the cost to build a new multi-use community center for the town. Ben Eldridge, the town’s utility superintendent, said Millersburg plans to use its own funds to construct a part of the facility that would include a new town hall and police station.
Eldridge noted, however, that there is a chance the town would not receive the full amount of the grant because of federal budget cuts for projects like community centers. If the grant is awarded, the town will be responsible for a 10 percent match plus the balance of the construction costs for the community center.
Eldridge said the new building would make Millersburg more appealing to the people who live there as well as entrepreneurs looking for a community to open a business in. The town is partnering with the Millersburg Parks and Recreation Department and the Millersburg Friends of the Park, a nonprofit organization, for the project.
