First responders were called around 4 a.m. Sunday, April 28, to Wattles Road, just west of the county line that borders St. Joseph and Branch Counties.
According to a press release from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, the car crashed into a tree. Police found several unopened alcohol containers inside the vehicle, but they are not sure which occupants were under the influence or wearing their seatbelts.
In the vehicle were:
• Jadalyn Riechert, 18, of Colon
• Tanner Cook, 18, of Colon
• Taylor Farmer, 18, of Sturgis
• Samantha Carr, 17, of Colon
• Jesse Bowen, 22, of White Pigeon
The five occupants were taken to Sturgis Hospital, where Richert is reported in fair condition, with several fractures. Cook and Bowen are listed in fair condition. Carr is listed in critical condition, with swelling on the brain. Farmer was treated and released.
Police continue their investigation. Charges may be filed depending on the information the sheriff’s department finds throughout the investigation.
