It’s the third time the group has received the recognition, which is based on educational and awareness activities, among other things. There are more than 25 coalitions funded by the IMHC and the Elkhart group also received coalition-of-the-year honors in 2006 and 2009.
“The NIHHC has once again had an exceptional year as it continues to provide chronic health condition prevention and education services throughout northern Indiana,” Carl Ellison, the IMHC vice president, said in a press release Monday, April 22. He also mentioned the group’s bilingual resource directory and the health fairs and health education classes it sponsors.
Morella Dominguez, the IMHC executive director of programs and initiatives, said Liliana Quintero, the NIHHC executive director, is a “key person” in reaching the Hispanic population. Dominguez also touted her “heart and sensibility.”
The NIHHC, a non-profit group formerly known as the Hispanic Latino Health Coalition of Elkhart County, initially served only Elkhart County but now also covers Noble and Kosciusko counties. Moves are afoot to expand further.
