One appropriation request was for $125,000 for right-of-way purchases at C.R. 3 and C.R. 32, according to Elkhart County Highway Manager Jeff Taylor said the funds would be used for right-of-way purchases.
A second appropriation was requested for equipment rental for $88,474.
Taylor explained the funds came from the county’s equipment sale of obsolete and rarely used equipment and added that the appropriation would be used in the future to rent the types of equipment sold at the auction. “It was costing us more to own than to rent,” Taylor said.
A $30,000 appropriation was also granted for miscellaneous engineering, including drafting assistance and environmental document preparation while a highway engineer is on leave for several months.
The commissioners also granted appropriation reduction requests to close out projects on C.R. 17 and Cleveland Road.
Taylor noted that two separate projects on C.R. 17 needed to be closed out. The first project took place between C.R. 28 and C.R. 30 and the second was between C.R. 30 and C.R. 32 for a reduction worth $30,360.60.
Taylor said all the right-of-way was purchased for the Cleveland Road project and requested an appropriation reduction for $89,543.75.
Commissioners also approved the Elkhart County Emergency Management ordinance that consolidates the county’s emergency plans, including its travel advisory.
The commissioners also granted permission to use the Elkhart County Courthouse lawn from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 2 for National Day of Prayer and approved various street closures in New Paris for the community’s Second Fridays events.
